Description
This is a re-creation of the Japan version of Bare Knuckles 3 that has been modified with an English translation for use with the Sega Genesis.
All the text in the game has been translated. This includes both dialogue in the story mode and the win/lose quotes in the Battle mode, and the English in the battle mode has been fixed.
The Sega Genesis version, Streets of Rage 3 , and the Japanese Mega Drive version, Bare Knuckle III , are based on the same core game — but Sega made major changes when localizing it for North America and Europe, which really took away from the Japan version of Bare Knuckles 3 which most consider to be the best version!
Here are the biggest differences:
Difficulty
This is the most famous change.
Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis)
- Much harder overall
- Enemies do more damage
- Bosses are tougher
- Easy mode ends early and prevents the true ending
Bare Knuckle III (Mega Drive Japan)
- Better balanced
- Enemy damage scaling is lower
- More forgiving gameplay
Many fans compare the difficulties like this:
- BK3 Normal ≈ SOR3 Easy
- BK3 Hard ≈ SOR3 Normal
A lot of retro players believe Sega intentionally increased the Western difficulty to discourage weekend rentals.
Story Changes
The Japanese version has a darker and more coherent plot.
Bare Knuckle III
- Centers around a dangerous explosive/drug called “Rakushin”
- Includes military conspiracies and terrorism themes
- Features General Ivan Petrov
Streets of Rage 3
- Rewritten around robot duplicates replacing city officials
- Rakushin references removed
- General replaced with the city police chief
The Western rewrite created several plot inconsistencies.
Censorship
Ash Removed
A mini-boss named Ash appears in BK3:
- flamboyant character
- rides the Stage 1 boat
- later fights the player
He was removed entirely from SOR3 and replaced with Shiva in those scenes.
Female Enemy Edits
Several women enemies were censored in SOR3:
- longer leggings
- covered legs
- altered outfits
Characters like Electra and Garnet/Soozie were toned down visually.
Character Color Changes
Bare Knuckle III
Classic series colors:
- Axel = white shirt / blue jeans
- Blaze = red outfit
- Skate = yellow/red
Streets of Rage 3
Colors changed dramatically:
- Axel = yellow/orange
- Blaze = white
- Skate = blue/red
Many fans dislike the Genesis palettes because they departed from the previous games.
Voice Sample Differences
Axel’s special move voice clip changed.
BK3
“Grand Upper!”
SOR3
“Bare Knuckle!”
Intro and Presentation Differences
The Japanese version includes:
- additional intro animations
- different title presentation
- “Round Clear” instead of “Stage Clear”
Some intro sequences were removed from the Western release.
Names Changed
Many characters and enemies were renamed in SOR3.
Examples:
| Bare Knuckle III | Streets of Rage 3 |
---
1.Sammy Hunter
2.Mr. X A-Z
3.Victy
4.Branch
Streets of Rage 3
1.Skate Hunter
2.Robot X
3.Roo
4.Bruce
Most retro fans prefer Bare Knuckle III because it:
- is less censored
- has the original story
- has fairer difficulty
- keeps original character colors
- includes Ash and other removed content
Game description:
A deadly new drug bomb has exploded in the city.
Axel, Blaze, and their allies must fight through the criminal syndicate once again to stop a global catastrophe.
New techniques, branching routes, multiple endings, and powerful weapons make the action more intense than ever!”
- 1–2 player simultaneous play
- Multiple playable characters
- Branching stages and endings
- New special attacks and combo techniques
- Fast-paced arcade-style street fighting action.
