Description

MUSEUM-GRADE HISTORICAL ARTIFACT: THE PERSONAL INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL SATCHEL OF WATCHMAKING TYCOON FRED G. GRUEN

Provenance: The Multi-Generational Gruen Family Mansion (Clifton, Cincinnati, Ohio)

Featuring Hand-Penned Name and Global Banking Addresses & Pre-WWII Sticlers of Grand Hotels of Europe.

Up for public auction is one of the most historically significant pieces of 20th-century industrial horology and transatlantic travel ephemera to ever surface on the secondary market: the personal, custom-engineered chocolate brown leather travel briefcase/satchel owned and carried by Fred G. Gruen.

Fred G. Gruen was the legendary co-founder, brilliant watchmaker, and mastermind president of the world-renowned Gruen Watch Company. Famous for constructing the iconic Swiss-chalet-style "Time Hill" factory headquarters in Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, Fred Gruen revolutionized American luxury watch manufacturing with the introduction of the legendary Curvex and Veri-Thin movements. This bag is a physical time capsule documenting his historic, high-stakes transatlantic business voyages during the Golden Age of Travel.

100% AUTHENTIC DOUBLE-SIDED HANDWRITTEN IDENTITY TAG (THE CROWNING PROVENANCE)

========================================================================================================

The absolute pinnacle of this briefcase is its original, preserved internal paper identity tag, entirely hand-penned on both sides by Fred Gruen himself. Rather than listing a simple home address, Gruen meticulously recorded his global network of elite private banking houses and watchmaking headquarters used to securely route sensitive corporate mail, financial drafts, and technical watch blueprints across international borders:

• FRONT SIDE: Hand-penned in crisp ink by Fred Gruen, reading:

"Name: FRED GRUEN - Bankers Trust Co, Paris / Address: or BIEL, Switzerland / CINCINNATI, Ohio. (over)"

-> HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Biel (Bienne), Switzerland was the literal beating heart of the Gruen Watch Company’s manufacturing empire. This is where Fred Gruen established their ultra-precise, state-of-the-art Madretsch movement factory. While traveling across Europe, his financial and corporate operations were anchored securely through the prestigious Bankers Trust Company in Paris.

• REVERSE SIDE: Hand-penned in original script, reading:

"% Koch Lauteren & Co. - Frankfurt / Main" (The "%" symbol denoting "Care Of")

-> HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Koch, Lauteren & Co. was an ultra-exclusive, historic German private banking house operating out of Frankfurt am Main (Gallusstrasse 21). This brilliant detail highlights how Gruen managed his elite European capital accounts and horological partnerships while traveling through Germany's precision manufacturing sectors.

RARE PRE-WWII HOTEL STICKERS & DEVASTATING NAZI-ERA HISTORY

========================================================================================================

Adorning the exterior of the rich chocolate leather are magnificent, authentic pre-WWII European hotel and travel luggage labels. These original labels serve as a poignant, physical time capsule of pre-war Europe just before the continent was reshaped by global conflict.

• THE DESTROYED HOTEL LABELS: Most notably, the satchel features a rare vintage sticker from Hotel Weimar, Rotterdam. This grand, elite European estate/hotel was tragically targeted, requisitioned, or physically demolished by the Nazi regime during the height of World War II. Having a surviving piece of pre-war travel ephemera from this lost landmark—permanently affixed to the bag of a prominent American industrialist—elevates this piece to a true museum-quality artifact.

• RECONNAISSANCE TRAIL: Additional original labels include Le Grand Hotel, Parisan, mapping out Gruen's precise travel routes through continental Europe's finest luxury and watchmaking districts.

========================================================================================================

CINCINNATI INDUSTRIALIST LUXURY & RETAIL HISTORY: BANKHARDT’S LUGGAGE

========================================================================================================

This satchel was purchased directly from the live, multi-generational residential estate auction of the historic Gruen family mansion nestled in the prestigious Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio (the historic enclave of the city's Gilded Age tycoons).

True to the uncompromising luxury standards of the Gruen family, this briefcase was likely originally sourced from Bankhardt’s—Cincinnati’s premier, historic purveyor of elite leather travel gear and fine trunks (which I purchased several suitcases and exquisite Oshkosh trunks from the estate ). A vast majority of the high-end leather goods and travel appointments found inside the Gruen estate bore the legendary Bankhardt provenance, representing the absolute apex of mid-century leather craftsmanship.

========================================================================================================

ENGINEERED PERIOD HARDWARE: THE ZIPPER-LOCKING PADLOCK SYSTEM

========================================================================================================

Reflecting Fred Gruen's personal obsession with precision engineering and security, the bag is outfitted with a fascinating, highly complex period-correct mechanical zipper-locking padlock system:

• The small metal anchor chain is permanently riveted directly into the steel frame of the bag.

• The heart/crescent-shaped padlock shackle is designed to swing through the chain and clip directly into the hole of the zipper's pull tab when fully closed.

• Once locked, the zipper is physically anchored to the bag's frame, completely preventing unauthorized access to his watch designs and financial papers.

• PLEASE NOTE: The bag does NOT include the key. The specialized padlock is currently safely open/unlocked, meaning the zipper and interior compartments are completely unhindered, fully accessible, and fully operational.

========================================================================================================

SPECIFICS, DIMENSIONS & CONDITION REPORT

========================================================================================================

• Color: Deep, Rich Chocolate Brown

• Dimensions: 15-3/4 inches (Length) x 13-1/2 inches (Height)

• Material: Heavyweight, Premium Grade Antique/Vintage Leather

• Condition: Beautifully authentic, unaltered vintage condition. The leather features a stunning, deeply earned chocolate brown patina with honest surface wear, character scuffs, and edge smoothing that can only be achieved through decades of genuine international travel. The zipper and mechanical lock components are physically intact and solid. The historic paper travel stickers show expected vintage fading, edge wear, and delicate aging which perfectly validates the antiquity and historical integrity of the piece.

This is an unparalleled centerpiece for Cincinnati history buffs, WWII historians, vintage ephemera/luggage label collectors, and elite horology/Gruen watch enthusiasts alike.

Please review all high-resolution photos carefully to examine Fred Gruen’s exceptional handwriting on both sides of the tag, the rare hotel labels, and the unique locking hardware.
